Standard Disclaimer:
This is a brief discussion of Daniel Pinkwater and, of course, of some speculative-fiction books by Pinkwater.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Pinkwater: it includes only those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn’t think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark (#) before the title so you know what’s what.)
I don’t pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Pinkwater tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Pinkwater worthy; in sum, to help you rank Daniel Pinkwater (and the works by Pinkwater listed here) on your personal literary “to do” list.
Regrettably, I have not yet had an opportunity to write an essay on this author, but the “Other Resources” section below will lead you to some information about the “Notable Books” listed farther down this page.
There is Pinkwater.com, his “official” site, a resource that contains The Hoboken Chicken Emergencyclopedia, another useful Pinkwater resource.
Beyond those, there are quite a few articles about Pinkwater, of which these are a few of the more substantial: “Welcome to Planet Pinkwater” at Salon’s “Mothers Who Think” feature; Pinkwater, Daniel M entry at the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction; Daniel Pinkwater: Insight to the Author at the D. Manus Pinkwater Pages site;“Deliciously Demented Daniel Pinkwater” [archived copy] at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library site; Daniel Pinkwater in About Town [archived copy]; and “Daniel Pinkwater” at Everything2. [archived copy]
There are also a number of interviews with Pinkwater available, not listed individually here—click the link.
And, with over a hundred books, there are numerous one-off reviews of particular books: Google Is Your Friend; still, to give you a brief overview, there are a couple of reviews of a Pinkwater omnibus (one of several), Five Novels, one from The Green Man Review [archived copy] and the other from Sebastian Banker [archived copy].
There are at least these:
