Standard Disclaimer:

This is a brief discussion of Tim Powers and, of course, of some speculative-fiction books by Powers.

This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Powers: it includes only those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn’t think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark (#) before the title so you know what’s what.)

I don’t pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Powers tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Powers worthy; in sum, to help you rank Tim Powers (and the works by Powers listed here) on your personal literary “to do” list.

A Few Words About Tim Powers

Regrettably, I have not yet had an opportunity to write an essay on this author, but the “Other Resources” section below will lead you to some information about the “Notable Books” listed farther down this page.

Other Tim Powers Resources

Tim Powers Resources on the Web

There are now several Powers-focussed sites and pages, though some are now getting rather dated. Of the dedicated sites, there are (in no special order): The Works of Tim Powers [archived copy, site now dark]; Tim Powers’ Facebook page; The Anubis Gates [archived copy]; Stranger Tides [archived copy]; and The Digging Anubis (dedicated to both Powers and James Blaylock, who are friends and frequent collaborators).

Of Powers pages, notable is Powers, Tim at the always useful Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. A couple of others are Tim Powers at The PotC Wiki and The Paranoid Squint of Tim Powers by Frederick Gero Heimbach at Liberty Island.

There are numerous interviews to be found. A representative few include Interview With Tim Powers by Fiona Kelleghan at Science Fiction Studies; Interview: Tim Powers at Lightspeed; Tim Powers: ‘I don’t have to make anything up’, an interview by Alison Flood at The Guardian; and A Conversation With Tim Powers by Kim Fawcett at the SF Site.

There are also seemingly countless one-off reviews of particular books available on the web. Rather than present a laundry list here to prove that I can use a search engine, let me point you to a couple of lists assembled by others: “Related Articles and Interviews” [archived copy] at The Works of Tim Powers (as noted above, site now dark); and “Links to Tim Powers Related Stuff” at Stranger Tides (also linked above) [archived copy].

For yet more Powers material, remember that Google Is Your Friend.
