Depends on the mood..anything from Mozart to Alison Kraus........but I find that vocals can be distracting.

I also have trouble with lyrics while I'm reading; my brain keeps getting distracted. I need either instrumental music or vocal/choral where the words are so indistinct as to be non-verbal. In the end, I mostly don't listen to music while reading -- if I listen to music, I want to listen.

Yes, same point. If I listen to a vocal that I really like I’m more likely to be drawn out of the book, even to sing along (yes, I’m one of those). My tastes in music are fairly eclectic however, so there are many types of music I find soothing or invigorating (by turns?) that I do play when I read. I don’t really get into most “modern” rock, metal, or hip-hop. That kind of thing. I suppose part of that is that I’m older and tastes get “set” at some point. I like classic rock (and roll), doo-wop, traditional country, a lot of blue-grass, some religious music (southern gospel...) a lot of classical...the list goes on but you get the idea. I was on a Liszt (Hungarian Dances primarily) kick a while back, and I mentioned Mozart last time. Sometimes the music will “take first place” in my thoughts, if that happens...time to pick new “reading music”. But it is something I do a lot, music and reading.

I prefer to listen to movie soundtracks while reading. In movie soundtracks I mean the symphonic background accompaniment of the movie, and not song compilations.

I enjoy this because (a) the music is instrumental, and (b) the music is often arranged as a symphony, telling a story in your mind. I find it remarkably compatible to reading a story (or doing all sorts of stuff, for that matter, like travelling. A brilliant closure to a musical piece or the faint sounds of a new chapter in the musical story often coincides with me stepping out of a train or so. My life has a soundtrack). :D

Hi there,

I am Smith communicating from UK, I often listen songs while reading. Mostly I would like to listen "My Heart Will Go On" from the movie Titanic because its a cool song sung by Celin Dion. Thanks for creating such a nice thread.
