Great Science-Fiction a critical list with discussions "That Other Genre""Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?""To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. --"Silver Blaze", Sir Arthur Conan Doyle While the publishing industry is full of "genres"--science fiction and fantasy are "genres" to it, as is horror--one especially seems, from my not-inconsiderable experience of ardent science-fiction and fantasy fans, to also be of likely interest to any reading these pages, and that is the genre variously called "mystery fiction", "detective fiction", "crime fiction", and a few other things. Just as this site on speculative fiction was a spinoff of a more general site, so it in its turn has now spun off some ancillary sites--the latest now being Matters Criminous, a site dedicated to presenting literate crime/mystery/detection fiction, analogous in many ways to the way this site seeks to present literate speculative fiction. The chief distinction is that whatever my expertise, or lack of it, in matters speculative, I do not possess a matching familiarity with matters criminous. Thus, the new site does not, and cannot, aim at being a comprehensive survey of what is literate in that field. I do, though, believe that what it does present would be pleasing to any who have found that this site is not too far from their own pleasures in fiction. At any rate, whether you are or are not at present a mystery-crime-detection aficionado, why not give it a look?
