James Branch Cabell (1879- 1958) was an American author of fantasy fiction. Although escapist literature, his works are ironic and satirical. All of Cabell's works before 1930 were assembled into the grand "Biography of the Life of Manuel", the redeemer of the imaginary land of Poictesme. These are tales of Poictesme where chilvary and gallantry are alive and well; the series follows Manuel and his descendents. In this work, the author's name is truncated to distinguish it from the volumes that make up this Biography of the Life of Manuel. 253 pages. 5.6 x 8.25 inches. The Literary Guild, New York, 1932.

1932. The statement of edition is "Second Printing Before Publication," but this was a publisher's error and it is actually the First Trade Edition. About Very Good hardcover with age-darkened spine, decorative paper over boards; w/o dustwrapper. Frontispiece and chapter decorations by Samuel Bernard Schaeffer. Reginald lists this as fantasy because of the inclusion of the heroic fantasy novelette "True Thomas by Moonlight." The rest is reflective Romantist essays.
