The first of two companion volumes which documents the later writing of The Silmarillion, Tolkien's epic tale of war. After the The Lord of the Rings was at last achieved, J R R Tolkien turned his attention once again to 'the Matter of the Elder Days' The text of the Annals of Aman, the 'Blessed Land' in the far West, is given in full; while in writings hitherto unknown is seen the nature of the problems that Tolkien explored in his later years, as new and radical ideas, portending upheaval in the old narratives, emerged at the heart of the mythology, and as the destinies of Men and Elves, mortals and immortals, ecame of central significance, together with a vastly enlarged perception of the evil of Melkor, the Shadow upon Arda. The second part of this history of the later Silmarillion is concerned with developments in the legends of Beleriand after the completion of The Lord of the Rings. International Edition

Complete set of first edition, first impressions. The first five volumes were published by George Allen & Unwin, the next three by Unwin Hyman, and the last four by Harpercollins. These were published from 1983 to 1996. Generally lovely condition, there is some sun fading to the jacket spines, most noticeably on volume 9, volume 2 has some marks to the inside of the jacket, some jackets with a little wear to spine ends or extremities, overall very tidy. Clean and bright books, square, firm bindings, generally sharp corners, clean pages, some light age toning to pages, more noticeable to the last two volumes, volume one has some very minor spots to the edge of the page block. No inscriptions. Very good condition, a consistent set with equal wear. Vol 1,3,5,6,7,8,10 are priced to the jacket flap, vol 2,4,11,12 with no price, vol 9 is price clipped.

FIRST EDITIONS, nine volumes with frontispieces (all but one of which colour-printed), further illustrations, paperstock to eleventh volume faintly toned, 8vo, original boards of different colours, backstrips lettered in gilt, the first four volumes with matching colours to top edges, one volume with a couple of very faint spots to fore-edge, dustjackets, one with publisher's re-pricing sticker to front flap, none clipped, a hint of fading to the backstrip panel of volume 9, volume 11 with tiny nick at head of backstrip panel, near fine. A superb set of this monumental expansion of the author's imaginative world, drawing on material - prose, poetry, and pictures - from throughout his career.

FIRST EDITIONS. 1st impressions. 8vo. 13 volumes. A complete set of the 12 volume History of Middle Earth plus the extra Unfinished Tales volume. Original publishers boards in different colours but all with uniform gilt lettering to the spines. In the original multi colour dustwrappers. A couple of very minor rubs to the extremities of a couple of dustwrappers but overall a very near fine, bright and clean set of this first publication of Tolkien's entire History of Middle Earth, in which tales, songs, poems, maps, illustrations, genealogical tables, and even linguistic primers for Tolkien's languages, give the fullest picture available of one of the most thoroughly imagined worlds ever created in the history of fantasy literature. The enormous content presented in these twelve volumes was only hinted at in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and was drastically condensed into a single volume in the Silmarillion which was published in 1977.
