Circa 1947-8. Bound with 32-page gatherings. Front paper label shows light rubbing and soiling. Spine ends are frying Spine detaching from back cover 3" in middle of book. Spine has 4 or 5 large discoloration spots along with several smaller spots. Both hinges still attached though back hinge is starting to weeken. This book belongs to filled out and later covered over with whiteout. Block has light standard reading wear.

Later printing, gift inscription on ffep dated 1944. Illustrated in b&w. Good, no jacket. Yellow cloth with front cover paste-on illustration, back hinge is cracked, front hinge is not cracked, but weak. light soil to boards, inside front paste-downs and ffep are browned around the edges.

Birthday insc for 14 Mar 1946 on prelim. Red boards bleached around edges, spine ends turned and bumped corners. Picture eps. Spine and binding slightly adrift at top. Bep and fep are thinner paper and quite browned, prelim has also got heavy browning around edges, plus foxing spots which occur in minor amounts throughout a relatively clean copy. worst page as in second image. Possibly due to the immediately post war paper stock used rather than way it has been stored as other copies have similar comments. Copyright page states 1942 as the publication date but this book does not have all the first edition points. Large dampstain on rear cover. The bottom corner of several pages is torn out, this does not affect text. Some small tears in cloth on top and bottom of spine.
