A smart copy of this illustrated collection of tales from German Romantic author, E. T. A. Hoffmann. Illustrated with ten colour plates and many in-text images also in colour. Collated complete. A collection of tales, including: The Interdependence of Things, The Sandman, The Mystery of the Deserted House, The Lost Reflection, and The Walled-In Door. Written by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, a composer, music critic, and artist. Illustrated by Mario Labocetta, an Italian artist and illustrator. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Printed in Paris by H. Piazza & Cie. 10" x 7.5", 207 (1) pp, with 10 full-page color plates and many other color illustrations in the text. A fine copy in publishers illustrated cloth binding. Mario Laboccetta (1899-1988) was born in Naples, but moved as a young man to Paris, where he gained fame for his richly colored, detailed, and sometimes erotic illustrations for posters, magazines, and books -- most notably this volume and an edition of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal.

Original pictorial cloth, faded red topstain. Mild foxing, mostly to first/last pages. Tight and square. The DJ in mylar is price clipped, sunned, nicked, with internal tape repairs to spine ends. Color illustrations. ; quarto; 207 pages

No author, adaptor nor translator is credited, so we'll go with the fabulous illustrator here. The illustrations are certainly the star of this dish. They include numerous plates and also small illustrations scattered throughout. The book is in excellent, collectible condition, with no tanning, foxing, or signs of prior use. The paper is toned to an attractive creamy ivory-beige. The jacket is intact, with light edgewear at the bottom and some more significant chipping along the top. It is now protected by a mylar Brodart cover. The book is not dated, but it is clearly identical to the George Harrap edition (and certainly printed at the same press in France) . First Edition. Hardback. 4to. pp 206. Bound in quarter navy blue leather over blue cloth boards, lettered gilt at the spine with five raised bands and top edge gilt. From the Royal library with a gift inscription on the first blank page from Queen Mary to a lady in waiting, "For Lady Minto from, Mary R - Christmas 1932." Very slight wear at front spine hinge, otherwise sound, very good indeed. Excellent condition.
