The complete edition of T H White's Arthurian epic, containing all four novels. The Sword and the Stone (with two new chapters); The Witch in the Wood (rewritten and now titled The Queen of Air and Darkness); The Ill-Made Knight and the not before published The Candle in the Wind. Jacket is not price clipped. 8vo.

NY: G P Putnam's Sons, 1940. 1st American with same date on title and copyrt pgs and no additional printings mentioned. Hardcover 8vo 291 pgs. Small b/w illustrations. Good with no dust jacket. Royal blue cloth with gilt on front cover. Top edge dyed red. Spine sunned and gilt is worn. Covers rubbed and have some fading. Wear to corners and spine ends. Vintage bookplate on front endpaper. Small stamp from 'Hathaway House Bookshop Wellesley' at bottom of same pg. Contents clean and binding sound. (King Arthur, Fantasy, Fiction) Inquire if you need further information.

Dust jacket is worn, creased and torn in several places, fixed by brown tape, unfortunately, on the reverse, but glassine cover holds the jacket in a presentable condition, at least. Not price clipped, original price 8s 6d. Top edge is grey with dirt or dust, fore edge is mottled, akin to foxing, very little of this affecting inner leaves. Slate red cloth boards in good condition, minimal rubbing but outer corners very lightly bumped, turning in slightly. Spine slightly cocked, causing outer edges of boards to be misaligned by about 3 millimeters. Top and lower edges of spine slightly discoloured, more so on lower right corner of spine. Internally, leaves reasonably clean, no inscriptions or annotation. Binding is tight, no cracks in hinges nor any loosening of leaves. Seller images provided. Blue plasticised cloth with faded gold design and lettering, solid structure, previous owner's bk-plated inside cover with penned signature, light foxing inside cover and first few pages and last few pages. Some corner wear to cloth, inside page edges deckled, a few pages also foxed here and there. 291 pages.

With Decorations by the Author. NY: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1940. 12mo, viii 291pp. Blue cloth pictorially stamped in gilt. Many b&w decorations. Spine ends a bit rubbed, corners slightly so, former owner’s name and number written at base of blank front endpapers, else a clean, tight copy in the original color pictorial d.w. (front and spine panel chipped and torn at edges, spine panel sunned, rear panel lightly soiled). First edition, first printing, issued the year before the British edition. The tale of Lancelot and his ill-fated affair with Guinevere, told with humor and humanity in White’s distinctive manner. This was the third of White’s Arthurian novels and the last to receive separate publication. This title, as well as The Sword in the Stone and The Witch in the Wood, were revised and edited for publication in The Once and Future King (1958) along with White’s final Arthurian work, “The Candle in the Wind” (which never received separate publication). A fifth Arthurian work, The Book of Merlyn was discovered among White’s papers and published posthumously in 1977. Schlobin 1115; (Tymn p.174); Waggoner 943.

Top corners slightly bumped. Light browning and a little wear to page edges. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Jacket has a quarter-inch triangular chip in the bottom edge of the front panel and slight chipping at the top of the spine, in the top edge of the rear panel and at the top left hand corner of the rear panel. There are also six small closed tears in various places in the edge of the jacket and some fading and edge rubbing to the spine. Some surface discolouration to the white area in the centre of the rear panel of the jacket. The front flap which is un-priced has a crease running diagonally down from the top edge. First printing.

First editions, first impressions, of the author's epic tetralogy, the most significant contribution to Arthurian literature in the 20th century. Based on source material in Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, White's work brought the mythological matter of Britain to new generations of readers. The Once and Future King volume comprises the new tale "The Candle in the Wind", and reworked versions of the previous three books, of which The Witch in the Wood is renamed "The Queen of Air and Darkness". The tetralogy was immediately influential, inspiring works such as Lerner and Loewe's Camelot (1960) and Walt Disney's animated feature The Sword in the Stone (1963) 4 works, octavo. Original cloth, bindings and lettering in various colours, top edge of The Witch in the Wood green. With dust jackets. Witch in the Wood with loosely inserted mailing card from William Heinemann; Once and Future King with ownership inscription on front free endpaper, "Adach Capt. Weeton, April 58", and old ink price on rear free endpaper. Bumps to spine ends, light foxing to edges, Once and Future King front inner hinge partially cracked but firm; jacket edges with a few shallow chips, creases, and short closed tears, first three jackets slightly soiled but bright, Once and Future King somewhat damp-stained, Ill-Made Knight with small tape repairs to verso, the first and third jackets price-clipped: a very good set in like jackets.

8vo. Original decorated blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, top edges stained red, fore-edges untrimmed. Small illustrations in the text by the author, endpapers of the first volume illustrated by Robert Lawson. Near fine copies with only traces of wear and age. None of the dustwrappers are price-clipped. The spines are lightly sunned, much less than usual. The have a little wear along the edges. The "Ill-Made Knight" lacks a small piece at the rear fold and the 'With in the Wood' lacks a small piece at the front fold. Otherwise, they are in near fine condition.
