After Robert Aickman's death in 1981 the manuscript of The Model, a wintry rococo fable set in Czarist Russia, was located among his papers. Aickman had told a friend he considered this novella to be 'one of the best things I have ever written, if not the very best.' It was duly published for the first time in 1987. The Model tells of Elena, a grave girl inclined to losing herself in dreams of becoming a student ballerina or coryphée. Her dolour darkens further when she learns she is to be sold into marital slavery by her father so as to settle the family's debts. Refusing an unendurable future she sets out to the city of Smorevsk to pursue her dream. First, however, she must traverse a landscape crowded by highly curious characters and creatures. 'A must for Aickman fans . A model of eloquent elegant enchantment.' Robert Bloch (Psycho) This is a used book in fair condition, meaning a worn but fully readable copy; it may be scuffed, have rips or marks, contain highlighted passages and annotations, or be missing its dust jacket. Most of our images are sourced automatically, so the book cover shown might be different to the edition we have in stock.

8vo., 138pp. Beautiful First Edition, First Printing with full number sequence, of this posthumously published novel. Bound in 1/4 greenish-blue cloth over maroon paper-covered boards with spine titles in gilt. Arbor House logo blind-stamped on front board. Square, tight, and clean throughout with little or no wear. Perhaps a touch of softness to the spine ends but barely. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($14.95), has a hint of wear at the front top tip and a few spots of soiling on the rear panel. Still fresh and bright with no chipping or tears. A very pretty collectable copy and surprisingly uncommon, particularly in such high-grade condition.

Aickman, Robert. The Model. New York: Arbor House, [1987]. First U.S. edition. Octavo, 138 pp. Original red boards with half-cloth dark green spine stamped in gold. A fine copy in fine pictorial dust jacket designed by Laura Hough. #1826. $175. This posthumously published novella will strike readers familiar with Aickman's darker strange tales as an excursion into new territory -- but an entirely successful one. Set in Czarist Russia, it is story about that troubled country; about the coming-of-age troubles of a middle-class Russian girl; about the troublesome but fruitful relations between models and reality, ambition, dreams, dread, and ballet. ". a strange and delicate winter fable, chilling and dream-like, reminiscent of The Nutcracker." -- Michael Swanwick.
