A most interesting collection, certainly well worth the reading.

I find it notable that in a good percentage of the cases, the authors are, despite the headline word "best", actually selecting "favorite", and the difference is clear; not a few pick the book that first got them interested in sf, in some cases even acknowledging nontrivial flaws in their choices. My feeling is that the "favorite" status has, in a few instances, somewhat clouded the reviewing authors' clarity of view as to the actual merits of the works, but differences of opinion are why they race horses.

I especially liked Grimwood's opening sentence about Mike Harrison's Light:
Light is the kind of novel other writers read and think: "Why don't I just give up and go home?"
