I can't find any Varney works here & his stories are so memorable that I remember passages from them years later. The paralyzed reporter who lived in an enabling mesh owned by her employers, for example, and even background characters like the lifeguards who shaved their heads in memory of their Olympic glory days, keep coming back.

The "Internet Speculative Fiction Database" lists only a couple of male authors named "Varney", and those don't look very prolific. Did you mean John Varley, the author of "The Persistence of Vision", The Ophiuchi Hotline, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, and many other works? Or is there an author I've not heard of, but perhaps should?
