Illustrated end pages of a floral design in a green colour. Green coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. A continuation of the story of Metabel Adams, first met in the author's previous book "A Fiddler in Barly". Metabels' father dies suddenly, and, on a walk in the forest she meets a young woodcutter by the name of Joseph – amiable and non--ambitious, and, very soon she has moved into his house in the forest with his uncle. This is the story of young love that never runs smoothly. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with bumping of the book corners. Rubbing of the book panels along with some stains and flecking and darkening of the back strip. Tanning of the textblock edges and age toning of the pages.
