This is the Scribner hardcover with "First American edition published 1979" and full printing line with "1" on its copyright page. Inscribed and signed by its author on the front end paper: "To Scott / Very best wishes / Christopher Priest / January 2 1982". This book is in very good condition, marred only by a red remainder mark on the bottom of its text block, plus wear on its covers' spine ends and bottom corners. Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Covers are unmarked and otherwise unworn, with bright gilt titles on its spine. Pages are unworn and otherwise unmarked. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is whole and also in very good condition, marred only by some light soiling and wear on its spine ends, a couple of short thin marks on its back, and a trace of toning to its spine. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its proud new owner in the same condition as my description.

Octavo, boards. First edition. Signed inscription by Priest to "David" on the title page. The author's second collection of short fiction, including two Hugo nominees. "Five delicate sf/fantasy stories about time and perception. Most notable are the title piece, 'Palely Loitering' and 'The Watched.' Priest is not really a stylist, but these tales are poetically conceived: he manages to evoke a curious, haunting atmosphere by dogged attention to detail and his characters' unusual states of mind." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 186. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-880. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#153968)

Signed by Priest, and with an autograph letter signed by Priest to John Fowles laid in, saying Faber was intending to send him a copy but Priest feared it would be misconstrued as a review solicitation, given the strong review Fowles had given a previous book [A Dream of Wessex], so Priest was sending a copy along himself so that it be received only as "inadequate appreciation for a lot of kind encouragement. You do not even have to read it! (However, if you have the time to glance through "The Negation" you might discover a fingerprint I put in for you.)" One may infer Priest means a metaphorical fingerprint, as no actual fingerprint is in evidence. An Infinite Summer is a collection of stories, including the first of his stories to feature the Dream Archipelago, which appears in a number of his works. Priest won the James Tait Black Memorial Award, the World Fantasy Award, and the British Science Fiction Association's award for Best Novel four times. The book is fine in a fine dust jacket, with Fowles' blindstamp on the front flyleaf; the letter is folded to fit in the book, else fine. Fowles, in his A Dream of Wessex review, had called Priest "one of our most gifted young writers of science fiction.I think not only H.G. Wells but Thomas Hardy himself would have enjoyed and approved of it." A nice literary association copy. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

London, Faber, 1979. First Edition. First Impression. Manuscript of Priest's novelette, gathered together in An Infinite Summer (for which the proof is included). 31 typed sheets. The story was first anthologised in Andromeda 1 in 1976, and subsequently in Trips in Time (Silverberg, 1977) and The Best Science Fiction of the Year 6 (Carr, 1977). This is the author's top-copy fair-copy of the manuscript, with a handful of minor corrections. Comparison to the proof shows considerable alterations. Manuscript in very good condition, coffee stain to first sheet, general edgewear and some markings from staples and paperclip. Proof is in good condition with some splitting at the spine and a little foxing. General wear. [5969, Hyraxia Books].
