Large octavo (22.5cm); tan cloth boards, stamped in brown on spine. in blue pictorial dustwrapper; xxvii, 291pp. Dustwrapper soiled and toned; chipping and small tears to extremities with minor material loss (especially along top edges); inner panels foxed. Textblock also foxed intermittently, with toning to preliminaries and top edge; deckled fore edges; ownership inscription on ffep. Very Good in Good dustwrapper. An anthology of passages from James Branch Cabell's Beyond Life, Figures of Earth, The Silver Stallion, Jurgen, and others in the escapist/fantasy author's extensive body of work. The Virginia-born author reached the peak of his popularity in the 1920's but hit something of a decline as the world inched closer to another World War and literary trends began favoring more realistic works. Nevertheless, he continued publishing extensively and left a legacy that remains, especially in his native Richmond.

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1930. Unrecorded binding variant. Bright, shiny, clean, square, and tight. Sharp corners. Dust Jacket has a few small chips, and a short (less than 1 inch) closed tear. NOT price clipped (3.00). No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. An anthology of Cabell's writings. Subtitle: Chosen with an Introduction and Initiatory Notes by John Macy. "First Published, September, 1930" is so-stated on the copyright page. Bound in the original brown cloth, lettered in dark brown on the spine. This appears to be a scarce binding variant of the first edition, unrecorded in the standard Cabell bibliography by James N. Hall and Nelson Bond. Hall #23 describes three binding variants: 1) black cloth with gilt lettering; 2) brick-color cloth with black lettering; 3) yellowish-tan cloth (code G: only 11-30 copies bound, valued between $480-$720 (in 1974). Could this unrecorded 4th binding variant be as rare as the yellowish-tan copies? Art-deco Dust Jacket design features a full-color painting of a woman in a long, flowing gown, standing in a beautiful garden setting. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine condition/Very Good dust jacket. 8vo. xxvii, 291pp .
