First impression of this new edition, with a new foreword by Fabian Peake, with the original illustrations by Mervyn Peake, published in 2001. Beautiful full-page double-page colour illustrations throughout. The book was originally published in 1939 - however, the bulk of that first edition was destroyed in the Blitz, as the warehouse of Country Life was graised to the ground. This occurred just as "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" was about to be published. Only a small number of review copies had been sent out and the book was not reprinted until after the war in 1945. The book is unpaginated. ***This copy is in lovely condition - near fine in pale-blue boards with black outline titles on the spine and an outline illustration on the front board. The boards are quite clean, with just a few coloured marks on the front board (please see scans). Head and tail of spine uncreased. Corners sharp - just a slight crease to the top corner of the front board. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Originally published in 1939. This wonderfully strange illustrated pirate fantasy by the cult novelist Mervyn Peake is scarce in any printing. Fresh oversized pale blue boards with illustration to the front board, blue endpapers, afterword by Fabian Peake dated London, 2001. The dust jacket about fine with colorful drawings to front and back panels, protected in a clear Brodart cover. Peake's idiosyncratic drawings gloriously realize his eccentric characters Captain Slaughterboard, the Yellow Creature and the entire colorful crew.
