CAPTAIN SLAUGHTERBOARD DROPS ANCHOR (New edition with the original illustrations by Mervyn Peake - a beautiful near fine copy)First impression of this new edition, with a new foreword by Fabian Peake, with the original illustrations by Mervyn Peake, published in 2001. Beautiful full-page double-page colour illustrations throughout. The book was originally published in 1939 - however, the bulk of that first edition was destroyed in the Blitz, as the warehouse of Country Life was graised to the ground. This occurred just as "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" was about to be published. Only a small number of review copies had been sent out and the book was not reprinted until after the war in 1945. The book is unpaginated. ***This copy is in lovely condition - near fine in pale-blue boards with black outline titles on the spine and an outline illustration on the front board. The boards are quite clean, with just a few coloured marks on the front board (please see scans). Head and tail of spine uncreased. Corners sharp - just a slight crease to the top corner of the front board. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. No foxing to the interior pages, and no offsetting to the endpapers. Pages clean. No creasing and no tears. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which is complete with no significant faults - just some light creasing to the top edge of the front panel. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £12.99. No serious creases, and no chips or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***307mm x242mm. Unpaginated. ***'Mervyn Laurence Peake (9 Jul 1911 - 17 Nov 1968) was an English writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. He is best known for what are usually referred to as the Gormenghast books. The four works were part of what Peake conceived as a lengthy cycle, the completion of which was prevented by his death. They are sometimes compared to the work of his older contemporary J. R. R. Tolkien, but Peake's surreal fiction was influenced by his early love for Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson rather than Tolkien's studies of mythology and philology. Peake also wrote poetry and literary nonsense in verse form, short stories for adults and children, stage and radio plays. Peake first made his reputation as a painter and illustrator during the 1930s and 1940s, when he lived in London, and he was commissioned to produce portraits of well-known people. For a short time at the end of World War II he was commissioned by various newspapers to depict war scenes. A collection of his drawings is still in the possession of his family. Although he gained little popular success in his lifetime, his work was highly respected by his peers, and his friends included Dylan Thomas and Graham Greene. His works are now included in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Imperial War Museum and The National Archives. ***"Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" is a darkly humorous children's picture book written and illustrated by the British author Mervyn Peake and first published by Country Life in 1939. It was his first published work. The book is notable for Peake's poetic style and his fine illustrations of the many fantastical beasts on the island.' (Wiki) ***A near fine copy of this re-issue of "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. Of interest to collectors of the illustrative work of Mervyn Peake. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Captain Slaughterboard Drops AnchorNearly fine/very good first edition thus with just a bump at spine-foot and scrape-incipient tear to bottom rear paste-down, clean and bright interior of this attractively produced first printing by Candlewick Press. Originally published in 1939. This wonderfully strange illustrated pirate fantasy by the cult novelist Mervyn Peake is scarce in any printing. Fresh oversized pale blue boards with illustration to the front board, blue endpapers, afterword by Fabian Peake dated London, 2001. The dust jacket about fine with colorful drawings to front and back panels, protected in a clear Brodart cover. Peake's idiosyncratic drawings gloriously realize his eccentric characters Captain Slaughterboard, the Yellow Creature and the entire colorful crew.

Captain Slaughterboard Drops AnchorOur good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
