It is the black cat Grimbold who introduces the boy Muffler to the night-world, much more exciting than the day-time world, but also more alarming. Nicholas Stuart Gray was a professional actor and wrote many plays, both for stage and television. He was regarded as a pioneeer of children's theatre in Britain and also wrote many children's novels and collections of fantasy stories.

UK hardback first impression. Scarce. Ex-library in original binding with signs as expected. The jacket has some rubbing and a couple of short tears. There is some creasing to front flap, but it has no actual library signs to it.

1963 1st edition with B&W illustrations by Charles W. Stewart; tightly bound in blue cloth with black cat design to front and yellow lettering to slightly discoloured spine; small patch of paper (from DJ?) adhered to bottom corner of back panel. Top page fore-edge yellowed. Internally, back free endpaper adhered to paste-down at bottom edge; a tiny bit of discolouration to initial pages; otherwise, a good, clean copy. Used - Good. Good hardback (no dust jacket)

Very good or better with splash marks to the top of text block, light rubbing and foxing at the edges in near fine dust jacket with some rubbing on the rear panel and small chip and crease at the crown. A children's story by the British writer Nicholas Stuart Gray, who has recently been rediscovered with the help of Neil Gaiman who called him "one of the most brilliant children's authors of the 20th century." Nearly all of Gray's books are surprisingly difficult to find. Very scarce.
