Referenced in Barron, Fantasy Literature 3-382; Magill, Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature, pp 781 - 786, and Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516 - 1975, pg 111. Map endpapers. Very good in a very good jacket. Hinges starting. Wear to corners. Prior owner's label affixed to front pastedown. Jacket intact but with various small chips. A highly detailed Utopian fantasy that Wright labored over for years, only to have it posthumously published. The introduction is by Sylvia Wright, the author's editor & daughter. The author's first and only book. He published extensively in various legal journals, particularly the California Law Review and the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. The author died early, at 48. During his lifetime he published just one work of fiction, the short story "1915?" in the Atlantic Monthly for April, 1915. Few people outside Wright's own family knew he had long been working on an extensive Utopian fantasy about an imaginary country he called Islandia, with an elaborately worked-out history, culture and geography, comparable in scope to J. R. R. Tolkien's life-long writings of Middle-earth. In his papers he left a 2300-page manuscript of a novel exploring the country, with appendices including a glossary of the Islandian language, population tables, a historic peerage, and a gazetteer and history of each of its provinces. Another book-length manuscript purported to be a general history of the country. After Wright s death his widow typed and edited the manuscript for publication, and following her own death in 1937 their daughter Sylvia further edited and cut the text; the novel Islandia, without Wright's appendices, was finally published in 1942, along with a promotional pamphlet by Basil Davenport, "An introduction to Islandia; its history, customs, laws, language, and geography, based on the original supplementary material." "Islandia" became a cult classic and ultimately spawned three sequels by Mark Saxton.

The novel was organized and edited by his widow Margaret and daughter Sylvia and eventually published in 1942 by Farrar & Rinehart. --- This is the story of an intricately-organized society in the imagined nation of Islandia, situated somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. A great utopian fantasy novel, comparable in conception and complexity to Tolkien's "Middle Earth." Wright, a law professor and legal scholar, created "Islandia" over many years in his free time after his academic duties at various U.S. universities, including Stanford, Michigan and Pennsylvania. When he died in an auto accident in New Mexico in 1931, he left a manuscript of over 2,300 pages plus appendices on a country called "Islandia," The appendices and a book-length general history of Islandia described language, culture, customs, population, historic peerage, and geography. His wife and daughter edited the work and trimmed it to the 1,013 pages published in the first edition in 1942. This copy is an early printing of the 1942 First Edition, lacking the publisher's colophon on the copyright page signifying the first printing. The original light tan buckram-covered boards are age and sun-darkened, particulary on the spine and along the edges, with some minor fraying of the cloth at the corners. The previous owner's bookplate is pasted to the front free endpage, concealing part of the Robert Graves-designed map on the pastedown. The front endpapers and first two dozen pages of text show a mild lower corner crease on the thin, WWII-era pages; text edges are lightly soiled and stained. Sorry, the dustjacket is missing. All that said, the book remains the 1942 first edition, complete and with the Leonard Bacon introduction. It is basically clean and unmarked, still tight and square. A great novel at a decent price.
