Dunsany, Lord. Jorkens Remembers Africa. New York, Toronto: Longmans Green & Co., 1934. First edition (preceding the British first). Octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-iv] v [vi] vii [viii-x] 1-303 [304-308: blank]. Original black cloth, printed paper label affixed to spine panel, all edges trimmed. A fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket, price-clipped, with very minor edge wear. #3516. $350. The second of the four Jorkens books, in which the dubious clubman, primed with drink, pumps out tales whose improbability ranges from the enigmatic to the elusive to the outlandish. One suspects that Jorkens was a projection of that side of Dunsany who could no longer access the imaginative wellsprings that fed those richly colored pre-war fantasies, tinged though they were with his awareness that their iridescent worlds were soap-bubbles. But a comprehensive understanding of this major figure is impossible without knowledge of his post-war as well as the pre-war visions. If Irish literature has a distinctive characteristic, it is found in its ability to see the comic and the tragic almost simultaneously, as if they were no further apart that what one would see with the left and the right eyes.
