Hardcover. Lost in the frozen polar wastes, an explorer huddles in his shelter, typing, with frozen fingers, the story of his lonely, extraordinary exploits, preparing to send the story to the nephew he has never seen. With his only companion, the tortoise-like mutant Jackson, the Uncle has gone in search of his ambition and his destiny: the awesome and mysterious White Lion. Illustrated on every page with stunning, beautiful, eerie original drawings, "Letters from a Lost Uncle" is the product of a unique imagination and a distillation of all that is most powerful in the strange genius of Mervyn Peake. Painstakingly re-originated from Peake's original artwork and typescript, this edition celebrates the centenary of Mervyn Peake's birth in 2011 and is re-issued alongside Peake's illustrated edition of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" (Methuen ISBN 978 0413 777140). Full colour, re-originated edition of a forgotten classic by the author of "Gormenghast". "I am now many miles further to the North-East and am writing from a cave in a gaunt hillside. When Jackson and I sat down to rest we could see our footprints stretching back to the edge of the world." LETTERS FROM A LOST UNCLE. Mervyn Peake. Methuen Childrens Books 1976 First Thus. ISBN 0416565409 Illustrated Hardback. This copy has a neat gift inscription from an aunt to a niece on the obverse of the title page but is otherwise FINE. The price clipped dustwrapper has been protected in removable clear mylar film. Letters from a Lost Uncle from Polar Regions, a collection of letters written by an adventurer to his nephew in England. Originally written in 1945 the book was well-received but produced on poor quality paper. Mervyn Peake made several points to the publisher about the way it had been presented and eventually it was withdrawn. It was subsequently published in this edition after the artist's death on better paper and nicely bound which would, I feel, meet with the artist's approval. Laid in is the inaugural newsletter from the Mervyn Peake Society Number 1 dated Autumn 1975. Ref T7
