Mandrake.First edition. Octavo, pp., 253, [1]. Publisher's original black cloth, titled in gilt to spine, in the original unclipped fuscia dust-jacket designed by John Woodcock. Top edge dyed red. Light spots of foxing to jacket verso, light soiling to lower panel, small indentation to upper corner. Corners slightly bumped but cloth clean and gilt bright. Small, neat ownership signature in blue ink to front free end-paper, otherwise internally clean. A very good, or better copy in like jacket. The debut novel by the renowned Susan Cooper better known for her acclaimed Dark is Rising series of children's fantasy novels. One of Cooper's few works of speculative fiction for adults the novel depicts a dystopian future England led by the dictatorial Prime Minister Mandrake. The rare first edition of the author's first novel.
