Peake's widow described Smith as "Mervyn's only and best friend." His account of their friendship is illuminated with 8 photographs. Also with 49 illustrations by Peake, including a full-color reproduction of a previously unpublished illustrated letter from Peake in 1935. 277 x 202mm, dark brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pp.128, including 49 illustrations & 6 photographs. Pale grey endpapers. Dustwrapper features a Peake painting, 'The Beggars are Coming to Town' on upper panel & a page from an illustrated letter to the author on lower panel. 'Goaty' Smith's childhood, like Peake's, was spent in China, but their lifelong friendship began during their schooldays at Eltham College. The book contains a wealth of previously unpublished material. I specialise in Mervyn Peake. Enquiries welcome.
