"Night Voices is the last, posthumously published collection of 'strange stories' by Robert Aickman (1914-1981). On the jacket of the first edition (1985) Aickman is quoted as saying, rather disingenuously: 'I do not regard my work as fantasy. I try to depict the world as I see it.' As Barry Humphries explains in his Introduction to this collection, Aickman's fiction '. . . captures the very texture of a bad dream which may start, as such dreams do, beguilingly; until the dreamer (and reader) feels the first presentiment of encroaching nightmareand cannot wake.' Aickman also claimed that 'the true ghost story is akin to poetry'. In blurring genres and literary forms, the fantastic is present in his work; never more so than in his extraordinary novella, The Model, also posthumously published (1987), and included in this edition of Night Voices. This 2013 Tartarus Press first printing reprinted five of those stories but dropped one story, ''The Trains'' (as it was already available in the 2011 Tartarus Press edition of WE ARE FOR THE DARK). However a lot more is added, beginning with a new/revised introduction by Barry Humphries. Also included is the weird novella THE MODEL (posthumously published in 1987), plus Aickman's ''An Essay'' (written on winning the first World Fantasy Award in 1976): also included are all seven of Aickman's introductions to the seven volumes in The Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories series which he edited: and finally there is a six-page ''Robert Remembered'', in which author Ramsey Campbell concludes this volume with memories of his friend. Note: this 2015 printing retains the 2013 date from the first printing, which is a little confusing (though the two printings are easily distinguishable as the 2013 printing is limited to 350 copies, and this is printed at the bottom of the copyright page: the 2015 reprint does not show this statement). Fine copy in a fine dustjacket (as new).

First edition thus, hardcover, has a tiny bump to base of spine, otherwise a solid, tight, sharp Near Fine copy in a crisp like dust jacket.

Square, tight, and clean throughout with little or no wear. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket, (£8.95), has a touch of wear at the top edge but is fresh and bright with no chipping, creases or tears. A very pretty collectable copy and quite scarce.

A UK uncorrected proof copy - in a wrapper. THE WRAPPER : The wrapper on this copy is bright, unfaded, complete and unclipped. It is - inevitably - bruised at the spine ends. There are no obvious differences between this wrapper and the wrapper used for the first edition. Looks very sharp. THE BOOK : The book is square and tight. There are no previous ownership inscriptions. The covers are clean and unfaded - there is innocuous toning to the lower edges and a small mark on the front cover where a sticker has been removed. The lower corners are very slightly bruised. The pages are clean. The closed page edges are sound. The binding is tight - no cracked hinges. No remainder marks. Uncommon.
