Real-Time WorldUK first edition hardcover of Real-Time World by Christopher Priest, published in 1974 by New English Library. Priest's first published short story collection, gathering his early genre fiction including "The Head and the Hand" and the title story, both frequently anthologised. The original NEL edition has become genuinely scarce. This copy is a former school library copy, retained with its original dust jacket in very good condition featuring cover art signed "Achilleos.". Jacket has some light fading on the spine, and age edges inside otherwise in very good condition. Condition: the boards are sound, with the gilt vignette and spine titling still bright and clear, though there is adhesive/sticker residue to the boards from where the library hard covered the jacket, this covering kept the jacket in very good condition. Institutional stamps appear to the title page and p.158, with a pencilled accession number to the front pastedown. The endpapers show noticeable foxing, and the text is age-toned throughout, typical of the cheap stock NEL used on its 1970s SF titles, but complete and unmarked beyond the library stamps noted. The binding remains tight. The dust jacket is complete and unclipped, retained in a protective sleeve. Sold and priced to reflect the library history and board condition. A good copy for Priest collectors and completists given the real scarcity of this title.

Real-Time World158 p. 21 cm. Blue cloth in pictorial dustjacket. Front flap price clipped. Ink stamp on front endpaper. Some pages browning. The author himself wrote the introduction to his first short-story collection, explaining that most of these tales are "about the effects of stress on people." Some characters question their reality, another self-mutilates as entertainment, while others live in a city under seige. Great amusement in bite-sized chunks.
