Light thumb marking, foxing and moderate tanning to pages, pastedowns and free endpapers. More prominent to text block edges. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has light tanning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

Tightly bound with faint thumb-marking throughout. Pencil inscription to reverse of frontispiece. Missing front endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Mild crushing to spine ends. Books has a backward lean. Unclipped jacket has moderate edgewear with chips, tears, and creasing. Heavy tanning to spine. Notable rubbing and marking all over.

Clean pages and illustrations with light tanning and mild foxing throughout. Moderate tanning to free endpapers due to dust jacket flaps. Pencil markings to front free endpaper. Top textblock edge dyed red. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and bumping to corners. Lettering is bright and clear. Minor wear marks to boards. Unclipped jacket. Panels and spine have light edgewear with tears and creases. Moderate tanning and wear marks to flaps, panels and spine.

This copy is in fine, unmarked condition bound in tan cloth covered boards with red titling to the spine and green decoration to the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The scarce unclipped dust wrapper has some minimal edge wear so best described as near fine condition. and has now been covered in clear, removable, Brodart, protective film. Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (commonly abbreviated as E. T. A. Hoffmann; born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann; 24 January 1776 – 25 June 1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, a jurist, composer, music critic and artist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffmann appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler. Hoffmann's stories highly influenced 19th-century literature, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. Ref LL 3

Hardback. Four tales from Hoffmann, the influential writer of high German Romanticism, whose works at the time of the publication of this small collection had been out of print in solo book form for half a century. The works have been selected and revised by J. M. Cohen who also provides an introduction. They're accompanied by Paul Gavarni's atmospheric illustrations from the French 1843 edition. The five stories are: The Golden Pot, The Sandman (on which the ballet Coppà lia is based), The Deed of Entail, The Story of Krespel, Mlle de Scuderi (an important influential early crime story). Hoffmann's works have had a huge range of influence from the ballet and opera of Tchaikovsky and Offenbach, as well as on the rise of crime, mystery, gothic, macabre and fantasy fiction through the nineteenth century. The translations are by Thomas Carlyle, the dramatist John Oxenford, Major Alexander Ewing (husband of the children's writer Juliana Horatia Ewing) and J. M. Cohen. First edition thus. Prettily bound in beige cloth with green decoration to front and to spine. titles in red. cloth is very clean, bright and neat. Dust jacket which is also illustrated by Gavarni, is rather dust marked and with some foxing chipped to spine ends and with a small number of short closed tears.
