509 pages, with short introduction, biographical note. First edition thus. Ten tales, illustrated with 27 full-page color and b&w lithographs by Richard Lindner. Royal 8vo (7" x 9-3/4"), dark red cloth with heavily rubbed gilt lettering and decoration, faded red topstain, wear to boards especially corners/crown/heel which has 1/2" tear at front of hinge, spine sunned, water spot and other soil to boards, edges and end papers age-tanned. Gift inscription on front free end paper, underscoring and/or marginalia by former owners (later Profs.) Ann and Warner Berthoff on approximately 10 pages. Laid in is clipping of 1952 TLS review of a different Hoffmann collection.
