Inscribed first edition of this story of a Yorkshire terrier who rallies his animal friends to fight an unseen enemy on the edge of WWII, with illustrations by Freddy the Pig's Kurt Wiese. Published as the US teetered on the edge of entering WWII, TAPIOLA'S BRAVE REGIMENT takes a surprisingly satyrical view of the conflict that raged in Europe. This is in contrast to Robert Nathan's works after the US had joined the war, which were far more patriotic. 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original light brown boards. Original unclipped ($1.75) color pictorial dust jacket. Pictorial endleaves of animals marching across a map of Central Park. Illustrated in black and white. 138 pages. Inscribed by Nathan to second blank. Gift inscription to jacket front flap, dated 1941. Jacket with mild edgewear, some toning to spine and edges; a couple tiny scuffs. Binding with slight foxing to edges, light toning to endpapers. Tight. Very good plus in very good plus dust jacket.
