The Best of John Wyndham 1951-1960 gathers Wyndham in that excellent mid-century mood where everything seems perfectly civilised until the universe quietly clears its throat. One moment there are tidy streets, decent manners, cups of tea, sensible shoes and people assuming tomorrow will be broadly similar to today; the next, something alien, botanical, radioactive, evolutionary or socially inconvenient has wandered in and asked whether humanity has considered being less smug. This is Wyndham?s great territory: catastrophe without theatrical shouting. His disasters do not always kick the door down. Sometimes they arrive politely, sit in the good chair, and wait for the British establishment to realise the rule book has caught fire. In these stories, the strange does not feel decorative or far away; it slips into ordinary life and starts rearranging the furniture. A change in nature, a scientific accident, a visitor from elsewhere, a shift in human possibility ? and suddenly all those reliable little assumptions about progress, order and who is really in charge begin making small cracking noises. The period covered here, 1951 to 1960, is prime Wyndham territory: post-war, anxious, clever, restrained, and faintly convinced that civilisation may be a temporary arrangement held together by grammar and timetables. He had a marvellous way of making the extraordinary feel not flamboyant, but plausible. The menace is often calm, which is much worse. Anyone can be frightened by a monster roaring in the road; Wyndham understood the deeper unease of something impossible being discussed over breakfast. Expect intelligent science fiction with a very British temperature: cool on the surface, quietly alarming underneath. Wyndham?s people are not swaggering space heroes with ray guns and abdominal confidence. They are ordinary humans trying to process the collapse of normality while still sounding reasonably grammatical. They observe, adapt, misunderstand, underestimate and occasionally behave quite well, although the species as a whole rarely comes out of these matters looking like it deserves a certificate. This collection is ideal for readers who like their speculative fiction elegant, unsettling and full of that particular 1950s dread in which the future is not shiny but deeply questionable. It is a reminder that Wyndham did not need vast interstellar machinery to disturb the reader. Give him a village, a laboratory, a family, a field, a newspaper report or a quiet change in the weather, and he could make the whole of human confidence look under-insured. Good copy, as sold by Crappy Old Books. Probably unread, with no spine creasing, so internally it has the smug freshness of a book that avoided work for decades. The front cover, however, has a crease as though it was once folded in a moment of paperback disrespect, proving that even near-pristine copies are not immune from sudden civilisation failure. Other than that, almost new ? a very tidy little Wyndham survivor, waiting patiently to make ordinary life feel less secure.
