Tartarus Press, Dutro Press 2001. Book condition: NM - Near Mint. Dust Jacket. None illustrations. Dust Jacket condition: NM - Near Mint. This the two volume 'Collected Strange Stories' of Robert Aickman published by Tartarus Press and Dutro Press in 2001. Robert Aickman is considered by many to be one of the finest modern writers of ghost stories. But Aickman himself referred to his tales as "strange stories", for they are often open to more complex interpretations. The writing is subtle and poetic, presenting us with both psychological and more material terrors. This first volume of the two-volume set of "The Collected Strange Stories" contains "We Are for the Dark": The Trains, The Insufficient Answer, The View. "Dark Entries": The School Friend, Ringing the Changes, Choice of Weapons, The Waiting Room, Bind Your Hair. "Powers of Darkness": Your Tiny Hand is Frozen, My Poor Friend, The Visiting Star, Larger Than Oneself, A Roman Question, The Wine-Dark Sea. "Sub Rosa": Ravissante, The Inner Room, Never Visit Venice, The Unsettled Dust, The Houses of the Russians, No Stronger Than a Flower, The Cicerones, Into the Wood. Also includes An Essay by Robert Aickman, An Appreciation by David Tibet, A Reminiscence by Ramsey Campbell. Cover artwork by Stephen Stapleton. 840 pages. Size: 6" x 9" (165mm x 240mm). Octavo, two volumes, boards. The major repository of Aickman's fiction. This two volume set collects Aickman's three contributions to WE ARE FOR THE DARK (1951) and the contents of DARK ENTRIES (1964), POWERS OF DARKNESS (1966), SUB ROSA (1968), COLD HAND IN MINE (1975), TALES OF LOVE AND DEATH (1977), INTRUSIONS (1980) and NIGHT VOICES (1985). Includes "Robert Aickman: An Appreciation" by David Tibet, "Robert Remembered" by Ramsey Campbell, and "An Essay" by Aickman written in response to receiving the World Fantasy Award in 1975 for best short story. ".it is not Aickman's quantity of output but his exceptional gifts as a writer - a prose style of impeccable fluidity, urbanity and elegance; a high sensitivity to those nuance and details productive of a weird scenario; a keen insight into all aspects of human psychology, not merely those touching upon the strange; and some very powerful weird conceptions that do not require copious, or any, bloodletting for the effectiveness-that distinguish him." - Pringle (ed), St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, pp. 2-3. Limited to 500 copies. Upper corners a bit bumped and bruised, otherwise fine copies in fine dust jackets. Copy of errata slip laid in. (33622)

Leyburn, Tartarus Press, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardback. A fine set of books in near fine jacket. Limted to 500 copies, this being one of 30 'deluxe' copies (though not recorded as such in R.B. Russell's Tartarus bibliography on his site) with TEG on both volumes and marbled endpapers. A fine set. The first publication of Aickman's eight collections (Tartarus did subsequently publish an ninth Aickman collection) in one place. An excellent collection. Volume one contains We Are For the Dark (previously published with Elizabeth Jane Howard, though the present volume contains only Aickman's entries), Dark Entries, Powers of Darkness and Sub Rosa. Volume two contains Cold Hand in Mine, Tales of Love and Death, Intrusions and Night Voices. An excellent book. Introductions by David Tibet and Ramsey Campbell. A further essay is included by Aickman. Excellent condition with just a couple of very minor signs of handling, some rolling to jacket edges. Certainly one for the ever-growing list of Tartarus collectors. [7870, Hyraxia Books].
