1959. First Edition. 308 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with gilt. Contains black and white photographic plates. Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing, mild to end-papers and text-block edges. Plates are bright and clear. Minor pencil marking to front free end-paper. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

Neat, clean, well bound pages with very minimal foxing, tanning and thumbing. Small inscriptions and neat labels may be present. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Inscribed in ink on the title page "With all good wishes to Ray, RBM." Binding tight, boards square, leaves crisp and bright. In the two-color illustrated dust jacket with price $5.95 intact on the front flap: edges chipped, light abrasions. Kingsley 1819 - 1875 was a parish priest, Chaplain to the Queen, tutor to the Prince of Wales, professor of History at Cambridge, novelist, Christian Socialist, pamphleteer, etc. Today he's perhaps best known for Westward Ho! and the perennial seller, Water Babies. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.

The covers and spine are lightly edgeworn, the dust jacket is creased and rubbed with a few chips and soil marks, and there is some underlining in the text.
