Parmi les livres qu'on chérira désormais comme des intimes objets de collection, Les Exploits d'Engelbrecht (The Exploits of Engelbrecht) de Maurice Richarson figurera en haut de liste. Enfin traduit en français, ce roman illustré a notamment été recommandé par Ballard, Michael Moorcock et Alan Moore. Rien que ça. Présenté dans une nouvelle édition par Savoy Books, The Exploits of Engelbrecht est un petit livre de 200 pages à peine, un monument de drôlerie et peut-être le meilleur roman surréaliste (tous pays confondus) jamais écrit. L'auteur, Maurice Richardson, est anglais (bien sûr) et a écrit cette affaire-là en 1950. L'écrivain est journaliste et en a soupé des chroniques sportives. Il a cette idée d'un sportif d'un genre nouveau qui viendrait décrédibiliser tout ce qui fait dans l'épique, l'aventure et l'emphatique. Et cela donne en toute simplicité, Engelbrecht, décrit d'emblée comme : "a dwarf, of course, like nearly all surrealist boxers who do most of their fighting with clocks." Le livre est illustré à l'ancienne (façon gravures, décalquées de tableaux célèbres de Bosch, Blake et Degas entre autres) par un dénommé James Boswell, dont les images ajoutent au charme de l'ensemble. Mais ce qui compte ici, c'est évidemment le texte, défendu ardemment par Ballard de son vivant, préfacé par Michael Moorcock et conseillé par Alan Moore dans sa revue de Northampton, Dodgem Logic (qu'on n'en finit pas non plus de recommander). Les Exploits d'Engelbrecht racontent en une grosse douzaine de chapitres les aventures d'un Boxeur Surréaliste Nain dénommé Engelbrecht dans un univers qui tient de la folie de Lewis Caroll et des inventions de Salvador Dali. Le célèbre peintre est d'ailleurs l'un des personnages (secondaires mais omniprésents) du romanpuisqu'il assiste le héros dans quelques-unes de ses aventures et notamment dans une sorte de match de rugby sur la planète Mars. Chez Richardson, aucune trace de logique humaine mais une inventivité remarquable et une volonté de jouer avec les univers réels incroyable. Le boxeur surréaliste a pour profession de se battre à mains nues contre des horloges. C'est ainsi que fonctionne la Fédération Internationale de Boxe Surréaliste. On a ainsi droit à une satire sur le milieu de la boxe, vue du côté des horlogers. Engelbrecht, en perte de vitesse, s'attaque ainsi à une pendule suisse lors d'un match épique qui durera plusieurs années. Il n'y a évidemment pas de limite de durée aux rounds dans l'univers surréaliste. Richardson taquine le foot et aussi les échecs dans un match étrange qui se tient sur un plateau ressemblant à l'Europe pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Parmi les moments tous savoureux du roman, on citera une inénarrable partie de golf où le terrain ne comporte qu'un unique trou, jouable en 2 ou 3 millions de coups. Le parcours consiste ainsi en une sorte d'excursion de plusieurs mois dans la jungle où l'on joue des coups en se battant contre des cannibales, des animaux géants, en jouant sous la mer, contre des adversaires qu'on croit morts et qui ressurgissent tout à la fin après avoir fait miraculeusement un exploit (le par en 1 coup puisque la balle avalée par un oiseau a été chiée dans le trou en plein vol !). Engelbrecht va à l'opéra, fait du théâtre, se lance dans le monde politique. Richardson ne se refuse rien et tout est exécuté avec une vivacité et une légèreté qui, même pour ceux qui ne sont pas des grands pratiquants de la langue anglaise, s'apprécie au premier coup d'oeil. Les 15 chapitres, qui se lisent de manière autonome (donc très simplement), sont habités par des personnages récurrents superbes comme le manager d'Engelbrecht, le dénommé Lizard Bayliss, perpétuellement dépressif et pessimiste, Salvador Dali donc, mais aussi le méchant (mais amical) Chippy De Zoëte, incomparable. Engelbrecht tombe amoureux. Engelbrecht va au théâtre de Plantes où des végétaux (parfois agressifs) donnent une représentation du Roi Lear. Je vous laisse imaginer ce que peut donner Shakespeare interprété par des cactées. La pièce dure des siècles et tout se termine dans le chaos. Pour le reste, il faut savoir que ce livre est une merveille et cela suffit bien. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper with a dedication to his friend Archie Lyall. Archie Lyall was an interesting character who had both a writing and acting career among other exploits and is currently best remembered as a travel writer. The boards have yellowing along the top edges of the front and rear panels and at the top and bottom of the spine. Light browning to the page edges. Endpapers have quite a bit of yellow spotting with the front free endpaper the most badly affected. A few small creases to the top corners of the pages which are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has a quarter inch piece missing at the top of the spine where there is a half inch closed tear next to the front panel. Light chipping to the corners, a small surface tear to the left edge of the rear panel and a half inch closed tear to the top edge of the rear panel. Heavy yellow spotting to the front flap where the dedication date has left a little ink mark. Illustrated by James Boswell. First printing
