The Hanging StonesA Silver John novel, in which the Appalachian minstrel winds up at the construction site of a modern-day Stonehenge and bad things happen. First edition (stated). A fine, tight copy in a near fine dust jacket with a few short tears and some rubbing to the rear panel. A publisher's review slip is laid in. THE HANGING STONESfine hardcover copy in a fine. Bruce Schluter, dustwrapper. 1st edition. Silver John, the wandering balladeer, is well respected among the back-country folk for his knowledge of woodcraft, the manly simplicity of his singing, and especially for his dealings with the dark mysteries that flourish.

THE HANGING STONESOctavo, boards. Inscribed and signed by Wellman on the title page to his book editor, who is also the dedicatee, and with a short line under the dedication by Wellman. The fourth Silver John (John the Balladeer) novel. "John (whose last name is never given) is one of the few truly original series characters in contemporary dark fantasy: a quiet temperate man who has had a taste of the modern world and rejected it in favor of the homely pleasures and superstitions of the rural South . For the most part . the stories are successful attempts to work folklore and legends from the Civil War and the American Revolution into dark fantasy narratives . [In this novel] John thwarts a cult attempting to resuscitate supernatural forces that predate the settling of the country by Native Americans . [The John stories and novels] crystalize ideas for supernatural fiction that Wellman had been tackling as far back as the 1930s in WEIRD TALES and thus serve as an important bridge between the early modern horror tradition and contemporary dark fantasy." - Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror (1999) 6-384 [Reference: Barron (ed), Horror Literature 4-317]. A fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket with some mild shelf wear at spine ends and corner tips, small closed tear to the upper rear panel. (33982)
