Folienkaschierung des Schutzumschlags gering gelöst. - Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18. Baron Dunsany (* 24. Juli 1878 in London; 25. Oktober 1957 in Dublin) war ein irischer Schriftsteller. Heute ist er hauptsächlich unter dem Namen Lord Dunsany für seine der Fantasy zugerechneten Kurzgeschichten bekannt. Leben: Einer der Vorfahren Lord Dunsanys war der von der römisch-katholischen Kirche heiliggesprochene Erzbischof von Armagh, Oliver Plunkett. Die Countess of Fingall, Gattin von Lord Dunsanys Vetter, dem Earl of Fingall, verfasste eine vielgelesene Beschreibung des Lebens des Adels im Irland des späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, unter dem Titel Seventy Years Young. Zu seiner Ausbildung besuchte Lord Dunsany das Eton College und die Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Er diente als Offizier der Coldstream Guards im Zweiten Burenkrieg in Südafrika und bei den Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers im Ersten Weltkrieg, war ein guter Cricketspieler und brachte es zum irischen Meister im Pistolenschießen. Lord Dunsany war zudem ein guter Schachspieler, beispielsweise konnte er 1929 bei einer Simultanveranstaltung gegen Ex-Weltmeister José Raúl Capablanca ein Remis erreichen. Besonders widmete er sich dem Problemschach, er hat zahlreiche Schachaufgaben hinterlassen. 1942 erfand er seine Schachvariante Dunsany's Game, bei der die 16 Steine eines der Spieler durch 32 Bauern ersetzt worden sind. Seine Liebe zur Löwenjagd regte ihn zu seinen wenigen autobiographischen Werken an. Im Allgemeinen galt Dunsany als Exzentriker, und es wird behauptet, er habe seine Texte mit einer Gänsefeder geschrieben. Zu seinem Werk äußerte er sich folgendermaßen: Ich schreibe niemals über Dinge, die ich gesehen habe, nur über die, von denen ich geträumt habe." Werke: Lord Dunsany schrieb größtenteils Kurzgeschichten, daneben aber auch Lyrik, Dramen und Romane. Die heute noch bekannten Geschichten aus dem Bereich der Fantasy entstanden in den Jahren zwischen 1905 und 1919. Sie sind in eine eigenständige Welt, Pegana, gesetzt, mit einer eigenen Mythologie und Geschichte, und gelten heute als Meilenstein der phantastischen Literatur. H. P. Lovecraft war von Dunsany beeindruckt; seine frühen Erzählungen zeigen Dunsanys Einfluss. Auch die von Lovecraft erdachte Traumwelt" ist stark von Dunsanys Werken geprägt. First edition. Black cloth gilt. Spine lettering a little dull but easily readable, a little rubbing on the binding, a very good copy without dustwrapper. A collection of stories, some with fantastic elements.

London, Jarrolds, 1949. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A very good copy. Some bumping to the jacket and spine tips, a little rubbing and creasing overall. 8mm tear to the lower fold. A patch of offsetting to the endpapers. Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was a prolific writer and one of the architects of what has now cemented itself as the fantasy genre. His work, along with Eddison, Macdonald and Morris, was key in creating the channels from folklore and mythology to entirely synthetic secondary worlds. [11815, Hyraxia Books].

Boldly signed by the author on the front endpaper in his characteristic black ink to Henry Taylor Lamb (18831960) Australian-born British painter, "To Henry, wishing you all a happy Christmas, D. - 1949." Henry Lamb was related to Lord Dunsany through his wife, Lady Pansy Lamb (19041999) (Pakenham) and from whose family this book was bought. Slight rubbing and fading at spine, otherwise sound, very good minus with clean text.

Near fine in very good indeed, very slightly chipped dustwrapper.Very good indeed in very good pictorial dustwrapper a little nicked, rubbed and creased at the edges. Scarce in such presentable condition.

Slight toning and spotting to textblock, otherwise internally clean. Minor edgewear. Very good. 'The Man Who Ate the Phoenix' is a collection of fantasy short stories, with 41 pieces. Lord Dunsany was involved in the Irish Literary Revival, and his contribution to the Irish literary heritage was recognised with an honorary degree from Trinity College Dublin.

223pp. Small octavo. First edition. Original black cloth with gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine. Minor wear along the edges of the boards and some rubbing to the front. A small publisher's description of the book has been affixed to the front pastedown. The wonderfully illustrated dust jacket has not been price clipped; a minor amount of shelf-wear along the edges of the jacket, mostly to the head and tail of the spine. Inscribed by the author on the ffep in black ink; inscribed again by the previous owner, just beneath Dunsany's inscription, with the claim that this was a "pre-publication copy from the author". Previous owner's stamp to the title page, as well as to the back free-endpaper. A wonderfully inscribed copy. A lovely collection of short stories, as well as the novella that the book is named after. Dunsany has inscribed this copy to Manuel Tarshish, an avid book collector and aspiring author; Tarshish's inscription to Franklin V. Spellman, who was a bookseller, is also present.
