Pictorial laminated boards. This good, meaty medieval story brings together two great talents, which is what's needed for the best of picture books. Great writing from Joan Aiken and superb pictures from Oscar-winner, Alan Lee. There's not all that many opportunities for acquiring examples of Lee's artwork and, for my money, that makes this book pretty special. Boards are very slightly rubbed, extremities have minimal wear, and there is one tiny little ding on foredge of upper cover. A very good copy, as issued, without a dust jacket. (The U.S. edition from Knopf had a dust jacket; this original Cape edition did not.)
