THE SEVENTH SWAN (Magicquest 3)Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. Cover and spine are good with only mild shelf/rub wear. No dog-eared corners. Solid Binding. All pages intact and legible. Clean. No store stamps. --- --- (The third book in the MagicQuest series) --- --- The background of this tale of adventure is 16th century Scotland, in the Highlands of the clan feuds and cattle-reiving days, and it has a sinister undertone of witchcraft and sorcery. Most of us are familiar with Hans Christian Anderson's great story, The Wild Swans, but how many have wondered what happened to the youngest, the one whose shirt was not finished, the one who, even when he became a man again, was left with a swan's wing? This is, in effect, the story of the youngest swan, of the girl who went to the gates of death to help him, of the mercenary soldier who loved them both, and other exploits and battles. . . . . .This edition was published as #3 in the MagicQuest series by Ace Books, a reissuing of classic young adult fantasy novels. . .See photos for additional content. . .

The Seventh Swan. An Adventure Story. Illustrated by Joan Jefferson Farjeon.FIRST EDITION, monochrome illustrations, pp. 252, crown 8vo, original pale blue boards, backstrip lettered in copper-foil with a touch of fading at tips, gentle knock at foot of lower joint, bookplate to flyleaf, dustjacket with an attractive colour-printed design, price-clipped, a couple of miniscule nicks and some very light dustsoiling to rear panel, very good. The author, born Phyllis Loriot Hatch, had been an actor and playwright in the 1930s, but from the end of that decade began presenting as male - and in 1959 underwent gender surgery. The present work, also written as a play, is set in the Highlands of Scotland (which the author claimed as native) in the sixteenth-century, with a 'sinister undertone of witchcraft and sorcery' (blurb) - it is a continuation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale of 'The Wild Swans', focusing on the youngest brother, who is left with a swan's wing. It has been cited as an influence by Neil Gaiman, who praised the enduring quality of the author's work.
