The author, born Phyllis Loriot Hatch, had been an actor and playwright in the 1930s, but from the end of that decade began presenting as male - and in 1959 underwent gender surgery. The present work, also written as a play, is set in the Highlands of Scotland (which the author claimed as native) in the sixteenth-century, with a 'sinister undertone of witchcraft and sorcery' (blurb) - it is a continuation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale of 'The Wild Swans', focusing on the youngest brother, who is left with a swan's wing. It has been cited as an influence by Neil Gaiman, who praised the enduring quality of the author's work.
